From the Mediterranean coast at Gruissan the race climbs steadily into the Pyrenees, finishing at the altitude resort of Font Romeu at over 1,800 m. It is a long, grinding ascent rather than a brutal wall, which favours strong climbers who can pace themselves — and gives the general classification its first real shake-up.
