Stage preview

Stage 1 opens with a team time trial along Barcelona's seafront, passing right by the Sagrada Familia on flat, fast avenues. The calm won't last: the final stretch climbs twice up to the Olympic Stadium at Montjuic, forcing the overall favourites to show their hand on day one.

Stage favourites

Stage 1 (Barcelona → Barcelona, 19.6 km) is a team time trial. Teams race together and the result is taken on the fifth rider to cross the line. Teams with a full complement of strong diesels and excellent synchronisation will gain precious seconds on GC rivals.

Teams must keep together as long as possible before the strongest riders push to the line. Dropping even one team member early can cost seconds.
